Pansy Pitchers

admin| Category: MLB | 2 Comments

“This past week we were treated to a story about the American legion Post 751 pitcher who struck out 12 by pitching a complete game.  Not too long ago, we were also told stories about major league pansies in the All-Star game who couldn’t go more than two innings.  Where is the real baseball being played?” - July 20, 2008

Here’s a perfect example of the type of Fan Line entries that stand best on their own, with no rebuttal.

I’d just like to see some photographs of this person after he calls Carlos Zambrano a pansy to his face.

All Star Roster Tweaks

admin| Category: MLB | 0 Comments

“David Jones’ suggestion to add more starters to the All-Star game is totally ridiculous. I think they should add more relievers. Starters are on a scheduled rotation whereas relievers can pitch nearly any day.” - July 18, 2008

Adding relievers to the All-Star rosters would be every bit as ridiculous as adding more starters.  All-Star managers do their best to get everybody entered into the game.  It wouldn’t matter if you had 5 relievers or 25 relievers, managers would still make their best attempt to play each and every All Star.  If Terry Francona and Clint Hurdle had known that this year’s All Star Game would go 15 innings, obviously their strategy would have been much different.

Ortiz, an Injured All-Star

admin| Category: MLB | 0 Comments

“How does David Ortiz make the All-Star team and he has been out for half the year and Ryan Howard doesn’t make the team when he leads the major leagues in home runs? That is ridiculous.” - July 16, 2008

David Ortiz made the All-Star team because enough fans voted for him that he received more votes than any other designated hitter. Since he was injured, the starting DH spot went to the #2 vote-getter, Hideki Matsui. Since he was also injured the starting DH spot went to the #3 vote-getter, Milton Bradley.

Ryan Howard did not receive as many votes for NL first-baseman as Lance Berkman, and therefore was not awarded a starting spot on the All-Star team. The coaches and players did not elect him onto the team as a reserve, in large part because of his .236 batting average. The other elected first basemen were Adrian Gonzalez (.284 BA - 99H, 22 HR) and Albert Pujols (.350 BA - 92H - 18HR).
