Michael Phelps on TV

admin| Category: Olympics | 0 Comments

“There is a need for some balance in NBC’s coverage of the Olympics. I saw countless hours of swimming coverage including Michael Phelps close finishes, what he eats for breakfast and what he does before and after events. No coverage of women’s track and field including local star Hyleas Fountain.” - August 17, 2008

First, give NBC a break. Track and Field just started on Friday, August 15 and the only finals on the schedule for the first two days were: Men’s Shot Put, Women’s 10,000 Meter Run, Women’s Shot Put, and the Men’s 100 Meter Dash.

Second, Michael Phelps’s performances throughout these Olympic games have been historic and unprecedented. 8 Gold Medals with 7 World Records. While I agree with you that I’m not too concerned about what he eats for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Phelps has certainly earned his TV time.

Finally, Hyleas Fountain is a great local story, but NBC must plan their coverage according to nationwide interest, and the Women’s Heptathlon simply isn’t on top of everybody’s list. I wish the best of luck to Hyleas. I hope she can bring home the gold. But, I don’t expect to see many of her performances live on television.

Too Much Phelps, Not Enough Lezak

“Why is everybody talking about Michael Phelps? Jason Lezak is who people should be talking about. If not for Lezak, Phelps would not have five gold medals.” - August 14, 2008

Right… We should stop talking about the guy who has earned 5 Gold Medals with 5 World Records (for a career total of 11 Gold Medals and counting).

Jason Lezak had the fast relay split on the US’s 4 x 100 meter medley relay, and he even bronzed in the 100m freestyle.

Let the Jason Lezak talk begin.

Where is Spitz?

“Is it just me, or is anybody else wondering why Mark Spitz wasn’t invited to the Olympics?” - August 14, 2008

Because he’s 58 years old? I think it’s just you.

In all seriousness, if you have a point, I’m completely missing it.

If it’s that you’re upset that Michael Phelps’s performances are being compared against Spitz’s, welcome to the sporting world. It happens every day in every sport.
