What do you know? Joe Knows Roses.

admin| Category: Penn State Football | 0 Comments

“The fans who want Joe to stick around are as clueless as he is.” - November 19, 2008

Clueless about what?  In his last 4 seasons, his overall record has been 43-10 with 2 conference championships and a 3-0 record in Bowl games.

To say that he’s earned his right to continue coaching, after 43 years of Hall of Fame service, is obviously an understatement.

To say that fans are clueless for wanting Joe to coach another year insinuates that there is a problem.  Where’s the problem?  I see an 11-1 team that’s heading to Pasadena.

“When JoePa does leave, the program will be lucky to approach, just like the basketball team, a .500 season every year.” - November 19, 2008

OK.  So, you’re implying that Joe is coaching and is having a positive impact on Penn State’s football program, not just serving as a figurehead Shhh… don’t speak too loudly around here!!

“I think that it’s amazing that Joe Paterno trying to reach 400 games is putting his own personal goals above the team. Joe should leave as a winner, which he is, and stop putting the program in jeopardy with his own goals.” - November 20, 2008

You’ve got your coaches mixed up.  It has been Bobby Bowden who has openly stated that 400 wins is a goal of his.  Paterno has never mentioned the number.  He has repeatedly asserted that the record is meaningless to him.

“Stop putting the program in jeopardy with his own goals” - I’m lost.  See recent results above.

“I do not want to open up a can of worms, but you have to wonder what would have transpired had Joe Paterno taken the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coaching job when he was offered the position in the late 1960s after Bill Austin was fired. This is when Chuck Noll took over the team. I guess you can only imagine.” - November 21, 2008

Bettis and Big Ben in 2005

admin| Category: NFL | 0 Comments

“Let’s get something straight. Jerome Bettis won a Super Bowl. Roethlisberger was simply along for the ride.” - October 4, 2008

Jerome Bettis was only the Steelers’ 3rd-down back in 2005.  He nearly gave that Super Bowl ring away by fumbling late in their playoff game against the Colts.  It was Roethlisberger’s tackle that kept Super Bowl hopes alive.

Oh, Romeo

“Romeo Crennel’s down 10-3 with three minutes left, deep in Pittsburgh territory and he kicks a field goal. Who can tell me the benefit of kicking a field goal?” - September 16, 2008

You had to feel bad for Romeo Crennel last Sunday night.  Despite severely mismanaging the clock in both halves of the Browns’ game against the Steelers, Crennel took gambles at the end of each half and lost both.

Just before halftime, with the Steelers down 7-0, the Browns were well within field goal range.  Crennel opted to go for the touchdown instead of kicking a field goal.  Derek Anderson’s pass was intercepted by Troy Polamalu to end the half.

Late in the fourth quarter, with the Steelers ahead 10-3, Crennel opted for a field goal instead of going for a touchdown.  He felt that his defense would be best at stopping the Steelers’ offense with a few extra points on the board.  It wasn’t meant to be, as the Steelers did all but run out the clock to secure a 10-6 win.

Kissing Suzy Kolber posted about the Romeo Crennel School of Clock Management.

The Houston “High School” Texans and the St. Louis “High School” Rams

“Hey, Steelers and Eagles fans, do not get too excited. You each played a high school team.” - September 9, 2008

This call makes me want to vote for Steven Jackson for Homecoming King.  Can I ask a cheerleader to prom?  I just hope Owen Daniels doesn’t stuff me into my locker.

If you think it’s creative or funny to insult some I-AA college football program or even Duke or Syracuse by calling them a “high school team”, so be it.  But let’s draw a line at the National Football League.  In the age of $100 million payrolls, every team has some form of legitimacy, and any time a team dominates an opponent 38-17 or 38-3, it demands some form of respect.  After all, only one team has made it through an entire season unscathed.

Instead of resorting to the age-old weak-opponent argument, I encourage you to try something that better conveys how you truly feel.

“I don’t like the Steelers or the Eagles, and it worries me that one or both of them might be good this year.”

“Why do any fans in central Pennsylvania cheer for the Steelers or Eagles?  I thought everybody (including the NFL) knows that this is Ravens country.” (sorry… couldn’t resist the inside joke… see below)

“Why were the Steelers on TV yesterday? Everybody knows that this is Ravens country. Even the NFL does.” - September 9, 2008

“I am completely depressed that Tom Brady got injured and is out for the season.  I don’t think my Patriots will go 16-0 this year.  I might need to find a new favorite team.”

2nd Stringer, Brett Favre

admin| Category: NFL | 0 Comments

“So Brett Favre, the best quarterback of all time, decides to come back to the Packers while he is still under contract with them and they say no. I’m a diehard Steelers fan. Tell him he can come to Pittsburgh and back up Ben Roethlisberger.” - July 18, 2008

That’s exactly what the Packers have been telling Brett Favre, but you’re missing the point. Brett Favre does not want to be a 2nd string quarterback. Not in Green Bay. Not anywhere.

The Packers have established Aaron Rodgers as their starting quarterback for the 2008 season, much like the Pittsburgh Steelers have established Ben Roethlisberger as their starting quarterback.

Brett Favre will only accept a starting QB job.
