“How nice to see the Americans doing better in the team play in the Ryder Cup without Tiger Woods. He is the weak link in the group. Thank God he is not playing.” - September 21, 2008
The Fan Line has known for quite some time that Tiger Woods is an “overrated weak link.”

“I can’t believe that Phil Mickelson is still the No. 2-ranked player in the world still. He keeps having one choke after another and can’t seem to win a tournament where a decent player is in the field.” - August 5, 2008
First, the rankings come from the Official World Golf Ranking. This is a statistical forumula that ranks golfers based on their previous performances and the strength of the field in which they had those performances. http://www.officialworldgolfranking.com/about_us/default.sps?iType=425. In short, there is no opinion involved.
Even if there was an opinion involved, like College Football, who do you think is more deserving than Mickelson? Mickelson has more PGA Tour wins than any active golfer except Tiger Woods, winning as recently as the Crowne Plaza Tournament in late May.
While you may have seen Mickelson “struggle” in the U.S. Open and the Open Championship by finishing 18th and 19th respectively, golf fans of today are spoiled by the super-human consistency of Tiger Woods. The way that Tiger Woods finds his way to the top of the leaderboard in each and every tournament that he enters is absolutely remarkable. Mickelson’s overall consistency, while nowhere near as impressive as that of Tiger, is pretty good in comparison to other golfers on the tour.
The World Golf Ranking awards golfers for overall consistency, and that is why you’ll see Phil Mickelson’s name at #2, far behind Tiger, but with a nice cushion in front of #3.
1. Tiger Woods - 18.73 avg.
2. Phil Mickelson - 9.64 avg.
3. Padraig Harrington - 6.25 avg.

“Does anyone else notice how pleasantly enjoyable watching the PGA is now that we don’t have to see every shot that the overrated Tiger plays.” - July 20, 2008
No, I actually didn’t notice. Neither did most of America. A tournament without “Overrated Tiger” and his 14 major championships in 12 years just isn’t worth my time. I’m glad you found it enjoyable though.
